Is The Happiness You're Chasing Leaving You Empty?
Have you spent your life chasing happiness—desperately trying to reach that “happily ever after” life, only to watch it slip through your fingers, just when you thought you had it?
What are you chasing that you believe will give you your “happily ever after”?
- The perfect relationship?
- A new car?
- A dream vacation?
- Winning the lottery?
- That dream job?
- Financial freedom?
- Your dream home?
- Retirement or no need to work?
Sure, those things can bring pleasure. But for how long?
Imagine going out to dinner every night. Would it still feel special, or would it become routine? How long did your new car make you happy—maybe a month, a year? Eventually, it becomes just another vehicle, and the search for happiness begins again.
Some chase happiness through addictions—seeking relief from trauma and emotional pain in substances, shopping, or distractions. But the high fades, and the cycle continues.
I knew a man who became a multi-millionaire by age 50. He had it all—a 60-foot yacht, a beachfront chalet in the islands, three luxury cars, retired by the age of 50, and endless parties with friends. Yet he confided in me that he was deeply depressed, numbing his pain with alcohol and antidepressants. He had everything the world says should make you happy, yet he was still searching, not knowing how to achieve that happiness we all dream of.
Can I gently tell you something?
You’ll never find true happiness “out there.” Sure, it’s fun for a while, but it will eventually let you down or leave you wanting more. Why? Because none of that “outside stuff” was ever meant to satisfy you.
It’s an inside job.
It’s about how you see yourself, your life, and most especially, your Creator. Long-term joy rather than fleeting happiness begins when you put God in His proper place in your life—when you trust that God is in control and has a purpose for your life—when you enter into a relationship and surrender to Him.
Let’s face it… life is tough. We all go through highs and lows, joy and sorrow, victories and struggles. But when I started to see that my challenges had a purpose and that I had placed my life in God’s hands, something changed. I found peace, purpose, hope, and faith. I also gained a quiet confidence that everything would work out for good—and most of it has. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have everything I’ve ever wanted—far from it. I still face all the ups and downs of life. Why? Because we live in a fallen world, and God says:
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, NLT)
I am at peace, having all that I need, fully aware and deeply grateful for every large and small blessing God has given and continues to bestow on me, rather than feeling the need to continually chase for more. I strive to be patient as I surrender life’s challenges to God, knowing He will guide me through them and use them for His good.
I invite you to stop chasing the world’s idea of short-term happiness and instead, embrace the long-term peace and joy you will find in a faithful, grateful, purpose-driven relationship with God.
Pause and Reflect
- Where are all the places I have looked for happiness in the past, but found it out of reach or short-lived?
- What “thing” or outcome do I believe will finally make me feel fulfilled? Will it really? For how long?
- What might God be inviting me to surrender instead of chasing?
- How could my life be different if I shifted my life perspective, becoming more aware of God’s blessings, and finding inner long-term joy in God, not materialistic, worldly, short-lived pursuits?
A Gentle Reminder
If you’re searching for your “happily ever after” in what the world can offer, long-term happiness will forever be out of reach. But if you shift your perspective from the physical to the spiritual—walking in step with the Author of your life story—you’ll navigate life with greater hope, faith, trust, and a peace that surpasses all understanding.
And that, my friend, is where continuous joy begins.
A Closing Encouragement
I pray that you take that step forward today; that you surrender all those worldly “things” you are continually pursuing in your search for happiness. God is patiently waiting to be your number one priority and partner with you on your journey in a spiritual life-changing adventure to peace and joy as you’ve never experienced.
