Are You Missing the Signs of God's Protection?
Have you ever walked away from a situation thinking, “I should have been seriously hurt… or killed… how is it possible that I wasn’t”?
Most of us have had moments like that—moments we chalk up to luck, coincidence, or quick reflexes. But when we look back with spiritual eyes, we begin to see something far greater at work.
Before I began walking closely with God, I’m certain He protected me countless times. But because I wasn’t aware of His presence, I didn’t recognize His hand. It’s hard to find something you’re not looking for.
Now, with a heart tuned to Him, I see His protection everywhere—sometimes subtle, sometimes unmistakably miraculous. I want to share a few of those moments with you, hoping they spark memories of times you were shielded by God without even realizing it.
Powerful Testimonies of Protection
- The Intersection That Should Have Ended Differently
One evening on my way home from work, I approached an amber light. The car ahead of me sped through, and everything in me wanted to follow, but something nudged me to stop.
When the light turned green, I eased forward. As I crossed the intersection, I glanced left and let out a blood-curdling scream as I observed a car flying toward me at what had to be 50 mph, clearly unaware of the red light. There was no time to think. I hit the gas, bracing for the impact that should have slammed directly into my driver’s door.
But the crash never came…
No screeching brakes.
No collision.
Nothing.
When I looked in my rear-view mirror, the car that should have hit me was sitting motionless in the middle of the intersection. How was he even able to stop that fast? How did he avoid me? It was physically impossible.
In that moment, I knew God stepped in. I drove home in awe, knowing that my life, as I knew it, could have changed drastically in a split second. I could not stop thanking Him, over and over, for sparing my car and my life.
- The Highway Miracle That Defied Logic
Less than six months later, God’s protection showed up once again; this time, even more dramatically.
It was dusk and rush hour on the New Jersey Parkway during deer-mating season, when accidents are common and often severe. I chose to be uncharacteristically extra cautious, staying in the right lane and keeping my speed under 60 mph, hoping to avoid a deer-related accident.
Suddenly, an SUV in the middle lane veered toward me at around 70 mph, only inches from my car. I knew he was going to hit me. I instinctively accelerated, hoping to minimize impact, bracing myself.
He slammed into my driver’s side back door, sending my car into a tailspin across all three lanes of traffic. I lost total control of the car. There was no time for anyone to stop, and with the roadway so congested, it was inevitable that I’d be struck repeatedly.
But then… something impossible happened.
My car somehow ended up on the right shoulder, facing the correct direction, without me remembering gaining back control. In utter disbelief, yet experiencing this unexplained calmness, I glanced to my left, shocked to find that cars in all three lanes were completely still—frozen—as if time had paused. Not one car hit me. Not one car hit another car trying to avoid me.
How was that possible?
It wasn’t.
I looked for the SUV driver who caused the accident, obviously attempting to exit the highway at the last second, and found him up on the exit ramp, checking his car for damage before driving away without even a glance at me.
When the state trooper arrived, he stared at the traffic flying by and shook his head. “I can’t believe this is all the damage you got to your car. This should have been a multi-car pileup with your car demolished, and you seriously injured if not killed.”
But the car was drivable with just a dent on the passenger door, and I was physically fine—not even whiplash, despite the sharp, continuous jerking of my neck as I tried to regain control!
Luck? Absolutely, positively not!
This was a miracle of divine protection—unmistakable and undeserved, yet freely given.
I can’t help but continue to think about how I should have been with my ‘bestie’ in heaven, who had recently passed, and my car should have been flattened like a pancake. I am in constant awe of how my loving God preserved my life and my car.
Pause and Reflect
- When have I been protected by God, either miraculously or subtly, without realizing it at the time? A closed door to a relationship? A sudden decision to take a different route to my destination? An inner knowing about whether to go somewhere or not? An accident that should have occurred yet did not?
- What moments in my life make more sense when they’re seen through spiritual eyes?
- Where might God be shielding me, even today, in ways I hadn’t realized yet?
Spend quiet time with God, allowing Him to bring those memories to the surface. His protection can often seem subtle, but never absent.
A Gentle Reminder
God’s protection isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it’s a delay, a detour, a closed door, or an unexplainable nudge. Sometimes it’s the relationship that didn’t continue, or the accident that didn’t happen, or the illness that could/should have been worse, or the healing before you even received a diagnosis.
He guards you more times than you may realize because He loves you—deeply, personally, and intentionally. We need to open our eyes to all that He’s doing!
A Closing Encouragement
My prayer is that from this moment forward, your eyes will be open to the divine protection surrounding you. May you recognize God’s presence in the ordinary and the extraordinary, and may your heart overflow with gratitude for His goodness.
He is with you. He is for you. And He is protecting you even when you don’t see it.
