Who Are You Trying To Impress?

We all innately need to be liked, accepted, and admired. We go out of our way to seek affirmation that we are smart enough, pretty enough, successful enough, popular enough, independent enough, strong enough, educated enough, and liked enough—and the list goes on.

Today’s world has put that need on steroids. Social media gives endless opportunities to showcase accomplishments, vacations, perfect children, prosperous living, and happy lives. And what does that produce? Comparison. Pressure. Insecurity. A constant whisper that we are somehow not enough. No wonder anxiety and depression are skyrocketing!

But deep down, we know the truth: most of what we see online isn’t reality. It’s a carefully organized highlight reel designed to impress strangers. And if that weren’t enough, the “like” button has become a modern-day scoreboard. People won’t admit it, but they check their posts repeatedly to see who approved, who noticed, and how many people validated them. It’s a quiet addiction to affirmation.

So, what does all this amount to?

Pride. Not the loud, boastful kind. It’s the subtle, sneaky kind that says, I need people to think highly of me. Pride is a sin God hates because it shifts our focus from Him to ourselves.

But here’s the good news.

The ONLY one you ever need to impress is God, and He is not impressed by wealth, beauty, popularity, or success. He doesn’t measure your worth by your follower count, your achievements, or how “put together” your life looks.

God looks at the heart. He cares about your character, your motives, your humility, your obedience, and your love. And here’s the truth so many people never hear: you are already enough in God’s eyes. You don’t have to perform for Him. You don’t have to prove yourself. You don’t have to earn His approval. He loved you first, He chose you first, and He calls you His.

Even acts of kindness, generosity, or service mean nothing to God if they’re done to gain applause and feed your ego. If the motive is to be seen, praised, or admired, the act becomes self-promotion. Jesus warned about this in Matthew 6, saying that when we do things to be noticed, “we have already received our reward.” In other words, human applause cancels out heavenly reward.

What is God looking for?  People who:

• serve quietly for God, not for themselves
• love without needing acknowledgment or praise
• live for an audience of One

Because the truth is this: When your heart is right with God, you stop needing to impress anyone else.
